Caryatids
Dance Performance and Introductory Lecture
Caryatids is a dance performance that explores the captive body and the possibility of liberation through movement. Inspired by the ancient Greek caryatids — female figures bearing architectural weight upon their heads — the work places four dancers on a contemporary “balcony.” On aerobic steps that transform from a static structure into a living, mobile instrument, they craft a new physical language that moves between fixation and release — a delicate yet persistent movement that refuses to remain a frozen image.
Before the performance, a short introductory lecture by Dr. Eliya Bartal will present the figure of the Caryatid and the ways in which it has come to signify weight, constraint, and the desire for freedom — from the ancient world to the present.
The evening invites audiences to reconnect with the body as a site of resilience, sensitivity, and creation — especially at a moment when the world around us constricts movement.
Reviews “A powerful work that examines the captive body in a charged encounter with the caryatids.” — Nira Perry, Salona
