Jonathan Omer Mizrahi | A Castle in Red

Set in an abandoned greenhouse on the Gaza-Israel border, Israeli soldiers are playing tomato war. At the outbreak of the war, agriculture along the Israeli border surrounding Gaza fell into crisis. The crop was left to rot, and the greenhouses grew out of hand. Under fire, the army dispatches some of its soldiers to undertake agricultural missions. In fact, this is an old story: the area surrounding Gaza was established through the construction of Nahal outposts, which were hybrid agricultural-military settlements strategically placed along the “Green Line” to control the border through large agricultural areas. The soldiers carried out the agricultural work while preventing the Gazan refugees from returning to the fields they owned.
