1995. The distance between my home and the Prime Minister’s residence was 550 meters. As the years go by, I occasionally remeasure the physical and mental distance between the Prime Minister and me. Thirty years later, I am still the same child, born into a country where a Prime Minister was murdered.
When I first heard the term squad, it was used metaphorically to describe a group of U.S. Congress members, but its roots lie in the streets, in the world of hip-hop — a crew one wishes to identify with. I am searching for leaders I can identify with — human, courageous leaders. I want to feel them up close, to see the sweat on their foreheads, as if I could almost touch them.
Speeches once spoken with eyes full of intention now serve as a soundtrack to the visceral, living, feeling body — imagining a different present.
Speeches once spoken in another place and time now serve as a soundtrack to the visceral, living, feeling body in the present moment.
